Igor Brezhnev

Poetry

Brezhnev writes urgently, crafting poems which are alive in our world, and he does so with vulnerability and grace.

america is a dry cookie and other love stories

“I write about love and heartbreak, death and grief, depression and joy, about the ideas of dignity and home. Once in a while I add a healthy dollop of nonsense to otherwise stark subjects. I believe that through sharing our stories we learn not only to connect with our own unvoiced emotions, but to empathize with emotions of others, and ultimately make the changes that make lives better.”
—Igor Brezhnev

This book is a collection of poetry by Igor Brezhnev published by Liquid Gravity Publishing in August of 2018 after a successful Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign. It contains 100 poems written between 2010 and 2018. The book consists of two parts. First part contains the illustrated poem ‘america is…’ which highlights the good, the bad and the ugly of today’s American experience and sets the background for the second part, titled ‘other love stories’, a gathering of poems that speak of subjects ranging from grief to romantic love to playful examination of today’s customs and mores. The poem, which gave the book a part of its title, ‘america is…’ was featured in Nailed Magazine on July 4th of 2018.

america is a dry cookie and other love stories is available to purchase on this website and at Tender Loving Empire store on Hawthorne in Portland, OR. You may also find copies of this book at Another Read Through, an independent bookstore in North East Portland.

A number of poems from this book, including ‘america is…’ are available to listen to on Igor’s new poetry album Good Days & Bad Days, released in December of 2018.

Igor Brezhnev’s nuanced word-play and concoction of verbal scents and senses is at full strength in ’america is a dry cookie.’ He’s managed to introduce me to characters inside me which I tend to overlook or assume have no place in my psyche. To my mind, these stories are not as light-hearted as those found in ‘dearest void’, his last book, but in many ways they are more powerful.

Good Days & Bad Days

“I have felt an urgency to share new poems a few months after the publication of the book. After months of performing poetry at events, recording an album seemed like the best way to bring the new poems to life, as well as give an extra dimension to poems previously published. It is also the first way to offer my poetry across borders reaching people in other countries.”
—Igor Brezhnev

In December of 2018, Igor has recorded his first poetry album Good Days & Bad Days at Shady Pines Media in Portland, Oregon. This album contains 27 poems, some of which have been previously published in his last book, and some new written since then. You can listen to and purchase the entire album or individual tracks on Bandcamp.

Can a person have eyes as seeing as telescopes and a heart as large as planet Earth? Yes. Proof? This book.

“My first book in print, dearest void, has been a wonderful journey of discovery for me. The people I have connected with and the path I chose because of the emergence of this book have altered my life in ways I have yet to count.”
—Igor Brezhnev

dearest void

This book was the first collection of Igor’s poetry in print. Published as a limited edition in March of 2016 by Liquid Gravity Publishing, dearest void contained poetic stories located somewhere between the mystical and the mundane, death and love, hope and despair, magic and reality, humanity and otherness. The book is a kind of travel diary with entries arranged not by date or place, but some arcane measure of encountered feeling. Some of the poems from this book have migrated into america is a dry cookie and other love stories and others remained behind in the hands of those who purchased this now sold-out and out-of-print collection.

I keep reading and re-reading... Igor’s poetry is beautiful and poignant, inspiring and touching. It challenges me to look deep within myself and speaks to expansive depth of human emotions. It’s my go-to book for when I’m traveling (I even have it in my suitcase on my work trip as I type this.) ‘dearest void’ is an incredibly special book and I highly recommend reading it (at least once but maybe a hundred times.)
— Kendra V.
Dearest Void is nectar for the soul. Words drip into my heart opening feelings that have been vacated from this realm of awareness for decades. This book is a forever must read because of the power it emanates in living the human experience. An incredible gift for those in times of transition, heart ache, human suffering, and mere existence.

the book of possibilities

Originally the book of possibilities was intended to be in print, but it ended up being an e-book. There were about 10 copies printed for our video shoot—these are roaming somewhere in the world. This book contained 26 extra-short stories, bordering on poetry. There is a lot of white space in the book of possibilities—quite intentionally so. The white space is part of the writing, inviting the reader to open up to possibilities and gently question life through physical interaction with the words within—draw, write and possibly cut-up and collage within the space. It was released in February of 2012 and has been downloaded over 5,000 times. It is no longer available for download, however, a few of the poems from this book have found their way into america is a dry cookie and other love stories.

A couple of fun facts about this book.
To promote the e-book Igor has produced eight different cards, each containing a different question quote from the book and a link to the website where the e-book could be downloaded. The cards became artworks in themselves—years after Igor would encounter people who would still have the cards pinned to their fridges, used them as bookmarks or kept them as framed artwork, saying how much they enjoyed having that particular question in their life.

Immediately after releasing the book a group of Igor’s friends gathered to film a video to potentially use as crowdfunding support. It was one of the first instances where an active collaboration between artists in multiple art forms has take place based on a book Igor has written. There’s still footage living on some hard drive of alphabet recited backwards and dances in white spaces. It awaits its time to become something more.
